The public examination of the doctoral dissertation of Sisko Hellgren, M.Sc.(Eng), will be held on 25 December 2016 at 12.00 at the Aalto University School of Engineering. The title of the dissertation is The Bayesian Model for Cruise Shipbuilding: a Process for Production Efficiency and Organization.

Project Organization offers the best probability for achieving set targets from the view point of production efficiency in cruise shipbuilding. This is a result from the research which was done comparing three different organization types.

The cruise shipbuilding project is a complicated chain of events where typically thousands of individuals partici-pate at various points in the production. Lead times are usually several years. The ship-yard builds the ship together with a vast network of suppliers. The network consists of material, component, design, subcontracting and turn-key suppliers. For research purposes, the Bayesian network was utilized to model the entire cruise shipbuilding process, with focus on three organization methods: Line Organization, Project Organization and Hybrid Organization.

This thesis studied the effect of those organization methods on the overall production efficiency. The results indicated that Project Organization offered the best probability for achieving set targets from the view point of production efficiency. These results can be utilized as basis for decisions on best possible organizations for similar projects, not only in shipbuilding but also in other industries that deal with large project type deliveries. The compiled Bayesian model is first of its kind, representing the entire cruise shipbuilding process as well as the comparison between the three organiza-tion methods.
