Sweco wants to encourage students to study structural engineering and to work in the field of design.

Director Atte Leppänen presented the Sweco scholarship worth 1000 euros to Aalto University student Jussi Tamminen.

For third-year student Jussi Tamminen the Thursday after Independence Day began on a high note when he accepted a Sweco scholarship worth 1000 euros at a breakfast event organised by Sweco.

The Sweco scholarship, which was handed out for the first time, is part of the collaboration between Sweco and the Aalto University Department of Civil and Structural Engineering.

‘We want to be involved in encouraging students to study structural engineering. We want to have some influence in helping students see the field of design as a possible future career option’, says  Atte Leppänen , Sweco's Development Director for business activities, explaining the background of the scholarship and the collaboration.

Professor Jari Puttonen , the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, feels that the presence of companies on university premises is of great significance. 'Cooperation with companies means a great deal for universities. In order to get gifted students to go into the field of design, it is important for companies to have a visible presence at the university.'

According to  Ella Bingham,  the executive director of the Foundation for Aalto University Science and Technology, the awarding of the scholarship specifically to a third-year student is exceptional. 'Scholarships are usually given for postgraduate studies or thesis work. It's great that Sweco has decided to recognise students at the bachelor phase of their studies.'

Jussi Tamminen, who is majoring in mechanical and construction engineering, sees the scholarship as an incentive for future studies. 'I was really happy to hear that I was chosen to receive the Sweco scholarship.'

The scholarship was presented on 7 December, 2017 at Aalto University. Jussi was impressed by the happy and relaxed manner of the Sweco experts. 'The Sweco people are networkers who are very easy to approach, and they have a pleasant and positive way to approach students.'
